On June 23, 2025, the Linux Foundation announced it had become the new home of the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, an open specification for letting AI agents built by different vendors discover each other, exchange information, and coordinate tasks across enterprise systems. Google originally published A2A in April 2025 with backing from more than 50 technology partners, including Atlassian, Box, Cohere, MongoDB, PayPal, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, UKG, and Workday, plus service providers such as Accenture, Deloitte, and McKinsey. By the time of the Linux Foundation transfer two months later, support had grown to over 100 companies. The move shifts A2A from single-vendor stewardship to nonprofit, vendor-neutral governance. Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin said the organization would ensure "the long-term neutrality, collaboration and governance that will unlock the next era of agent-to-agent powered productivity." Founding contributors named in the announcement include AWS, Cisco (through its Outshift AGNTCY components covering directory, identity, messaging, and observability), Salesforce, SAP, Microsoft, and ServiceNow, each of which supplied a supporting quote committing engineering resources to the project. Google has positioned A2A as complementary rather than competing with Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP): MCP standardizes how a single agent connects to tools and data sources, while A2A standardizes how separate agents communicate with one another. The protocol's code and specification are hosted publicly at github.com/a2aproject/A2A. The transfer to a neutral foundation is a concrete, checkable governance change rather than a roadmap promise -- the project now has an open repository, a named nonprofit steward, and a public list of founding corporate contributors, which together make its future development auditable by anyone rather than dependent on one company's internal decisions.
