ITU's Agent Trust Group Picks Up Its First Industry Member

On July 9, the International Telecommunication Union launched the Focus Group on Trust and Identity for Humans and Agentic AI (FG-TIDA), reporting to ITU-T Study Group 17, the UN body's security standards arm. The initiative's stated purpose is direct: the ITU announced a new initiative to develop frameworks for trusted digital identity and to ensure that the behaviour of AI agents remains trustworthy and accountable throughout their lifecycle. The framing behind the effort is worth noting. As AI systems plan and act with growing independence, the ability to establish an agent's identity and whether its behaviour can be trusted becomes critical, and increasingly, AI agents need to identify and authenticate one another. That's a UN standards body stating plainly that agent-to-agent authentication, not just human-to-agent auth, is now in scope for international standards work. This week brought the first concrete sign of industry uptake: Afero, an IoT security platform, announced its participation in the newly launched Focus Group, joining as a supporting organization. That matters less for Afero specifically than for what it signals — a body whose chair role sits with Afero's own chief security strategist, who serves as Chair of Working Party 2 within Study Group 17, giving the new focus group an institutional link straight into existing ITU security standards machinery rather than starting from zero. The group's ambitions are broad and slow-moving by design: it will develop common terminology, reference architectures for identity and trust, interoperability mechanisms for digital credentials, and will hold its first meeting in Paris in early December 2026, followed by a second meeting in Geneva in January 2027. That's a six-month runway before the group even convenes twice — a reminder that international standards bodies move on a different clock than the vendor announcements (Okta, Microsoft, CrowdStrike) that have been shipping agent-identity products since Q1. What's genuinely new here isn't the concept — decentralized identity for agents has been building since early 2026 — but the fact that a UN telecom standards body is now the venue where vendors, IoT platforms, and governments are expected to negotiate a shared reference architecture, rather than each building competing proprietary credential schemes. Whether that consensus process outpaces the fragmentation it's meant to prevent is the open question for the next year.
